What Did Augustus Caesar Achieve?
Augustus's goal was to make the empire strong and safe. To provide security he built a professional army. He also built a special unit called the Praetorian Guard. They were like body guards for Augustus. Augustus's legend concurred new territory in Northern Europe. He rebuilt Rome with palaces and fountains. Thats when the arts began to flourish. Augustus imported grain from Africa to feed the poor. He knew that a well feed population would be less likely to cause trouble. He devoted most of his energy to improving Rome's government. To Rule his huge population he appointed a proconsul in every city. They were like governors. He formed the Roman Tax System. Taxes caused wars, so he made a system that was fair. He paid the tax collectors a salary so they wouldn't take peoples money.
Who Led Rome After Augustus?
Augustus trained his relative Tiberius to Emperor. The next three were Caligula,Cladious, and Nero. Tiberius and Cladious did good for Rome while they ruled as Emperor. But Caligula and Nero were insane and cruel to the people. Caligula ruled after Tiberius, he had a mental illness. He also had many people murdered, and wasted a lot of money. Caligula even gave his favorite horse the position of consul. Eventually the Praetorian Guard killed him and put Cladious in charge. After him was Nero, who was evil. He killed his mother and two wife with his hands, and fiddled while Rome burned. Then he committed suicide.
